The Hon. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, CON, has stated his commitment to change the narrative of Agriculture and Food Security sector for the benefit of the populace and welfare of Nigerian farmers.

The Minister made this known during the Press Briefing on the “Way forward for Nigerian Agriculture towards delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR”, held in his office recently.

He revealed that the commitment was geared towards providing the desired leadership direction to steer the Agriculture and Food Security sector towards the attainment of the key priorities of the President’s 8-point Agenda.

He pointed out that all that needed to be changed and do had been examined and would be aligned with existing initiatives and programmes, in line with the four priorities of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President, which includes; ensuring food security, economic growth and job creation, poverty eradication  and inclusiveness (youths and women, private sector) .

Sen. Kyari noted that all the programmes and initiatives shall be completely aligned to towards attaining these four Presidential priorities and shall be guided by the Implementation of the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP).

He stated that the Ministry was in the process of carrying out a robust stakeholder analysis that would produce a working stakeholder map, indicating who does what, where and how and what are the mutual beneficial areas for the small holder farmers, large scale  farmers, processors, marketers and the organised private sectors.

According to him, “This will bring about resource-use efficiency while reducing duplication and wastages”, The Minister added.

Speaking further, Sen. Kyari noted that the current state of food security was threatened by issues of availability and affordability, stressing that malnutrition and rates of food inflation requires that we work all year round to ensure increased food production while putting in place, measures to make food available, accessible, affordable and of the right nutrition on a sustainable basis.

The Minister stressed on the underlying challenges which includes; insecurity, youth’s unemployment amongst others and called for innovative and trending solutions.

He added that climate change also posed as greater challenge as it was noted by the President in his speech at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

However, the Minister emphasized that all these challenges requires not just a change in tactics and approach but injection of new knowledge, innovations, skills, techniques, technology and value orientation.

The Minister noted that Mr. President had demonstrated his total political will to transform the Agriculture and Food Security of our dear country by not only changing the name of the Ministry to Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security but also making food security the number one presidential priority of his agenda.

Sen. Kyari, therefore rolled out focal areas that hinge on integration, sustainability and resilience to the challenges of the sector, which span the immediate, short, medium and long term priority actions.

In his remarks, the Hon. Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr. Abdullahi Abubakar, CON, stated that his counterpart and himself were committed towards achieving Mr. President’s promise to deliver the Renewed Hope Agenda.
