Conservation and Management of marine fisheries resources

—Promotion of sensitization, awareness creation and anti-piracy/ illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fisheries campaign.

—Promotion of Alternative Fisheries Dispute Resolution among Fisheries Sectoral Operators

—Implementation of ICCAT, EU and USA shrimp regulations on exports

—Bilateral Fishing Rights Agreements with Friendly Countries in conjunction with the P.R.S Department of the Ministry.

IUU/Fish Catch Certification

—Certification of fish/shrimps products for export

—Listing of vessels and premises for fish and shrimp export.

—Management of Nigerian fisheries laboratory in Lagos

—Processing and issuance of Health Certificates for fish export

—Implementation of international best fishing practices


—Update and enforcement of fisheries laws and regulations.

—Conservation, judicious exploitation and management of fisheries resources across the country.

—The development and modernization of the means of production, processing, storage and marketing.

—Improvement of quality of life in fishing villages and communities.

—Provision and improvement of employment opportunities and livelihoods in rural fishing communities.

—Provision of fishing inputs to registered Fishermen Cooperative Societies/Groups.

—Promotion of Gender interests (women and youths) in fishing communities

—Ensuring the implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsibilities.

—Facilitation of easy access of fisherfolks to financial institution for credit.

—Provision of infrastructure at various rural fishing communities aimed at improving the quality of life of the fisherfolks through participatory approach.The infrastructures may include landing jetties for fishing craft, potable water, electricity etc.

—Promotion of Co-management of Fisheries resources in fishing communities between the different tiers of Government, the Community Leaders (Sarkin Ruwa) and the fisherfolks.

—Capacity building of Fisherfolks.

—Promotion and collaboration with the Fisheries Cooperative Societies and apex Organisations for the purpose of securing inputs and Government patronage.

Artisanal Inshore Fisheries Branch

—Establishment of Fisheries Development Centres with facilities such as landing jetties, net lofts, Smoking Kilns, Ice-making Plants.

—Provision of fishing inputs to fishermen.

—Capacity Building of fisherfolks towards improving their vocational skills, new knowledge in technology adoption co-management of facilities and resources easily adaptable.

—Collection, collation, analysis and dissemination of fisheries statistical data.

Legal Framework, Enforcement and Conservation Branch

—Update and enforcement of fisheries laws and regulations (Both Inland and Sea Fisheries laws)

—Implementation of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF)

—Monitoring and Evaluation to ensure compliance to the various fisheries laws and Regulations.

Stock Assessment and Stock Enhancement Branch

—Study on the analysis of water quality in large water bodies in the country such as Lakes, Reservoirs and Dams.

—Stocking and Re-Stocking of Lakes, Reservoirs and Dams across the country

—Collection, collation, and analysis of fisheries Statistical Data.

—Monitoring and Evaluation of Project Activities.

Fishing Inputs Marketing and Technology Branch

—Allocation of Fishing Inputs to the Fishermen Cooperative Societies through the respective State Governments.

—Collection of authenticated list of State Fishermen Cooperative Societies through the Cooperative Department of the Ministry.

—Release of Fishing Inputs to the beneficiary Cooperative Societies under the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) Scheme through the respective State Governments.

—Identification/Collaboration with the local fishing gear fabricating Companies for easy access and affordability by the Fishermen.

Marine Fisheries Resource Monitoring and Control Branch

—Exploratory Fishing in Collaboration with the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research;

Fishing Vessel Monitoring and Tracking System Operation Branch

—Monitoring and Tracking of Fishing Vessel Operations (On Fishing Grounds and in the Maritime Zone);

—Standardization and Certification of Vessel Monitoring System Devices on Fishing Vessels;
